Highway to Spiritual Reconstruction by Dr. Diana Moye-Mitchell

Have you ever seen a street, road or highway under construction, and there appeared to be nothing in need of repair? Well, as I left out of the front door of my home, for my routine walk through the neighborhood, I was surprised to see trucks and construction workers working on my street. I was baffled over the sudden need of repairs, and the scene of the workers removing asphalt from my street.  From what my natural eye could see, nothing appeared to be wrong with the street.  There were no existing cracks, potholes, or problem areas.  As I stared in shock over the machines being used to remove gravel, I noticed that only portions of the street were being repaired.  The designated areas for repair had rectangular patches on the road where asphalt was being removed, recycled, and repaved.  After the shock set in over what was happening to my street, I decided to seek answers for why all of the sudden construction.  A worker informed me that the Department of Transportation for the county had previously done an inspection of the streets in the neighborhood.  The results of the inspection revealed weak spots throughout areas in the streets that were in need of repair. Although things appeared to be okay on the surface of the streets, there were weak spots hidden underneath the asphalt. If these areas went without being repaired, the streets could potentially cave in and become hazardous to the residents.

As I pondered over these findings, I thought, "as in the natural, so in the spiritual."  On our Christian journey in life, we become weary and worn to the point of having weak spots in our lives that are in need of repair.  Often times, the weak areas are blind spots that we do not recognize or either choose to ignore and do nothing about to remove them.  When left unaddressed, these areas often leads us into a life of sin, and results in us being alienated from our loving God (Isaiah 59:2 ~ "But your iniquities separated you from your God;").  To avoid these instances, we must, on a regular basis, invite God, who is the Master Construction Worker of our lives, to do a search of our hearts, and identify areas in need of repair. Any hidden sin found must be repented of, and removed from our lives, in order to avoid sinking to a bottomless pit of eternal separation.  God is willing and able to restore, and reconcile us back to Him again.

PRAYER

Dear heavenly father. Today I desire to be free from anything that dishonors you, and separates me from your loving care. I invite you to search my heart. Reveal any hidden weak and sinful areas in my life. Open the eyes of my heart so I can see the things you see about me, good or bad. I surrender my life to your care and repair. Thank you for your grace and mercy that grants me the opportunity to repent, be renewed, restored and reconciled back to you. In Jesus Name, Amen.

DAILY VERSE

Search me, O Good, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24

LIVING FOR TODAY

Living a life of Restoration is remembering that God’s love allows me to return to Him, and be renewed again. He is the great physician who specializes in repairing underlining issues of the heart that no one can see, and at times, even me. There is no sin, so deeply rooted within that the blood of Jesus can’t set me free from. I live each day grateful and thankful for God’s grace and mercy. Because of it, I can recover, when overtaken by a sin, and be reconciled to run this great race again.

Remembering A Family Christmas Tradition

As the year draws to a close, the cherished traditions that families hold dear come to mind. Whether it's traveling by car, plane, or train to be with loved ones near or far, or adorning the house and Christmas tree in anticipation of holiday festivities, this time of year is filled with special moments.  Reflecting on my own childhood, one standout tradition was the annual family gatherings at my paternal grandparents' home. All eleven of their children, along with their families, would converge to savor the grand dinner meticulously prepared by my grandmother. Amidst laughter and joy, the grandchildren would engage in spirited games with our grandfather in the family room, dodging his attempts to catch us.  Yet, the highlight was undoubtedly the secret mission to raid the large red buckets of homemade cookies that my grandmother had hidden strategically throughout her home. Amidst play, we'd sneak away one by one, indulging in the array of treats—peanut butter, chocolate
